A farmer needs to cross a river with a fox, a chicken, and a bag of cornmeal. He has a small boat that can only carry himself and one item at a time.
If left alone together on either bank without the farmer present:
The fox will eat the chicken.
The chicken will eat the cornmeal.
How can he get everything safely to the other side?
Take the chicken across to the far bank (leaves fox and cornmeal together on the near bank—safe).
Return empty-handed to the near bank.
Take the fox across to the far bank.
Bring the chicken back to the near bank (leaves the fox alone on the far bank—safe).
Take the cornmeal across to the far bank (leaves fox and cornmeal together on the far bank—safe).
Return empty-handed to the near bank (leaves the chicken alone on the near bank).
Take the chicken across to the far bank.
This is an unusual paragraph. I’m curious as to just how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so ordinary and plain that you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is highly unusual though. Study it and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out. Try to do so without any coaching.
The letter "e", which is the most common letter in the English language, does not appear once in the long paragraph.
Four people need to cross a rickety bridge at night. Unfortunately, they have only one torch and the bridge is too dangerous to cross without one. The bridge is only strong enough to support two people at a time. Not all people take the same time to cross the bridge. Times for each person: 1 min, 2 mins, 7 mins and 10 mins. What is the shortest time needed for all four of them to cross the bridge?
It is 17 mins.
1 and 2 go first, then 1 comes back. Then 7 and 10 go and 2 comes back. Then 1 and 2 go again, it makes a total of 17 minutes.
You are killed in a plane crash and find yourself in front of 2 doors: one leads to heaven and one will lead you to hell for eternity. There is an identical troll at each door. You find instructions posted on the wall behind you. You can ask only one question and you can only direct it to only one of the trolls. One troll will always lie to you - regardless of your question - and the other will always tell you the truth. And only the trolls themselves know which one will lie and which one will be truthful. That is all that you are told.... What is the one and only question that will ensure you passage to heaven, and why?
Ask any of the tolls this question. "If I were to ask the other troll which is the door to Heaven, which door would he point to?" Now when the troll answers by pointing to one of the doors you simply take the other door.
